What is Tele-Rehab?

During these unprecedented times during the Covid-19 pandemic, DeRosa Physical Therapy has been effectively accommodating all patients who prefer on-site physical therapy services, as well as successfully implementing our “Tele-Rehab” platform to accommodate those wishing to stay at home.

Virtual platforms such as the hippa-compliant, Zoom program, allows one-on-one consults with your physical therapist. Patient portals allow updates on home exercise and educational programs.

What Does Tele-Rehab Look Like?

* You will need a device with a camera and microphone. This can include your computer, ipad/tablet or smart phone.

*Your physical therapist will send you an “invite” with a meeting ID number that you can use to login to your virtual session.

* Find a quiet, private space that you can move around, if needed.

* Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, as your physical therapist may ask you to do certain movements or exercises during your session.

* Grab any “equipment” you might need for your visit, such as a yoga mat, resistance band, foam roller.

* Be ready to have fun, learn from your PT and ask any questions you might have!

Tele-Rehab (tele-health) is covered by most insurance companies. Don’t let Covid-19 prevent YOU from getting the treatment you need from you physical therapist.

Functional Dry Needling

What is Functional Dry Needling?

* A procedure that involves multiple advances of a filament needle into the muscle in the area of pain and typically contains a “trigger point.” It is called “dry” needling as there is no injectable solution.

* Most patients will not even feel the needle penetrate the skin, but once it has and is advanced into the muscle, the feeling of discomfort can vary drastically from patient to patient.

* Typically positive results are apparent within 2-4 treatment sessions but can vary depending on the cause and duration of the symptoms, overall health of the patient, and experience level of the practitioner.

* Mechanical Neck/Back Pain

DeRosa PT – Coronavirus Update

At DeRosa Physical Therapy, we understand that individuals and businesses across our community and the globe are faced with very difficult decisions and challenges.  We must all continue to work together to control the coronavirus spread and keep each other safe.

DeRosa Physical Therapy is working closely with the rest of our profession to avoid interruptions in patient care – while simultaneously adhering to stringent safety guidelines.  We will continue to remain open for care, but it is essential that each patient monitor himself or herself for any of the symptoms or history that have already well described:

  • fevers with cough or shortness of breath,
  • have been on a cruise ship in the last 30 days,
  • out of country travel in the last 30 days,
  • been exposed to a person who has tested positive for coronavirus.
  • feeling sick or “under the weather.”

If any of the above are relevant to you, please do not come to the clinic, but rather protect yourself and others by staying home.  Obviously the situation is fluid and it is an unprecedented time in our history.  We will remain open to care for patients as long as realistically possible.  We will continue to monitor recommendations from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and federal and local health officials in regards to making timely decisions affecting your care.

As always, should you have any specific questions or concerns please feel free to contact us directly at:

Every patient and visitor is encouraged to use our facilities to wash hands and utilize the hand sanitizers we have made available.

Preventative Actions

Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic Therapy: Benefits the Entire Body and Patients of all Ages!

Physical therapy treatment can benefit patients with all types of conditions/injuries in a vast majority of settings. Many patients are not aware that some physical therapists also treat and strengthen their patients entirely in the water. Aquatic therapy has amazing benefits that can positively impact a patient’s recovery, regardless of their age. Exercise in the water can be extremely beneficial not only for the patient with an arthritic joint, but even a younger athlete who wishes to return to sport sooner following a surgery to the lower limb or injury where heavy load is an irritant. For instance, Aquatic therapy can be helpful in the maintenance and remobilization of cartilage health, including providing optimal early and modified loading following injury (example: ACL injuries).

Aside from the benefits of aquatic strengthening regarding the musculoskeletal system, rehab in the water has been shown to positively impact other aspects of the body as well. Research has shown aquatic immersion creates important circulatory effects, including increasing cardiac output, reducing blood pressure, and increasing cerebral blood flow (that’s more blood to the brain!). Warm water immersion also produces a balancing of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which can decrease inflammatory processes, reduce anxiety, improve mood state, enhance working memory (also seen in patients suffering from dementia), and increase cognitive task performance. For all these reasons and more, Aquatic Physical Therapy can be a huge benefit to further progressing a patient’s recovery and their overall health.

At our Summit Orthopedic Center location, we are proud to offer physical therapy treatment in our heated, bromine filtered, indoor pool. We have physical therapists who specialize in working with patients in this setting, than can use the aquatic environment to help reach your health and wellness goals.
